In addition to being a splendid beach, Hiukka is also is place of renown because it is a sandy esker formed at the end of the most recent ice age. Hiukka is a part of the extensive Kainuu esker area. This area extends from Hiukka via Kajaani (Paltaniemi), Koutaniemi, Ärjänsaare, Manamansalo and Säräisniemi to Rokua.
Located by the shore of Lake Sapsojärvi and 1 km in length, Hiukka is an excellent swimming place for the whole family. The shore of Lake Sapsojärvi is shallow and the lake bottom is pleasant to walk on. Another way to get acquainted with Hiukka is to walk along its lovely nature trail. In the summer, there is a kiosk-café at Hiukka.
