Hiidenportti National Park is a place where visitors can sense the peace of the great outdoors and the unique character of Kainuu wilderness. The heart of Hiidenportti National Park is the wildly magnificent Hiidenportti Gorge, which is also one of Kainuu's most formidable natural wonders. The Hiidenportti Gorge is 1 km in length. It is steep-walled canyon, with rockfaces 20 metres high in places. At the bottom of the gorge there are small ponds surrounded by treeless mires. The gorge dates back to times before the most recent ice age.
This area remains as a unique sample of ancient forests. It was marked off already in the 1940s as a park forest and ancient forest. Characteristic of this national park is the detailed mosaic of mires and upland forest.
Hiidenportti National Park is located at a distance of about 50 km from Vuokatti. Signposts to the national park are placed along on the south side of Highway 76 between Kuhmo and Sotkamo. A visitor guidance facility is provided within the national park.
